Iowa State University has had several highly successful wrestling coaches throughout its history. The following are brief profiles of some of the most notable coaches:
Harold Nichols (1954-1985) - Nichols led Iowa State to two NCAA team championships in 1970 and 1972 and produced 28 individual NCAA champions during his tenure. He also coached Dan Gable, who is regarded as one of the greatest wrestlers of all time.
Jim Gibbons (1986-1992) - Gibbons was a two-time NCAA champion as a wrestler at Iowa State before taking over as head coach. He led the Cyclones to four top-four finishes in the team standings at the NCAA Championships.
Bobby Douglas (1992-2006) - Douglas coached Iowa State to the 2001 NCAA team championship and produced seven individual NCAA champions. He also coached Cael Sanderson, who went on to become one of the most successful coaches in NCAA wrestling history.
Kevin Jackson (2009-2017) - Jackson was a two-time Olympic champion before becoming head coach at Iowa State. He led the Cyclones to a Big 12 championship in 2010 and produced two individual NCAA champions.
Kevin Dresser (2017-present) - Dresser was hired as head coach at Iowa State after a successful tenure at Virginia Tech. He has led the Cyclones to two top-20 finishes in the team standings at the NCAA Championships and produced one individual NCAA champion.
